The great battle.
In 1287, Marco Polo went with Kublai Khan to have a battle against Khans uncle (Nayan). Nayan had an army of 300,000 troops. But this didn't scare Khan because he had an army of 460,000. They watched Nayans city from above. Though Nayan's army was outnumbered, they formed stratigiclly.A horn was blown, which began the battle. They started by firing arrows at eachother. As they got closer, they were using their swords. It was the most fearful battle. Many of the men were on horse back. As the war went on, Khan's army overtook Nayan's army so they fled and gave up. Nayan and a few other soldiers were taken by Khan's side and kept as prisoners. They still tried, but they got defeated. Once again, Khan gained power.
Last Sung emperor defeated.
Kublai, being a greedy ruler, wanted even more land. So, he went after the last Sung emperor. This would be the hardest defeat for the Mongols. The only way they had to get to places they wanted to defeat was by horse back. But, that posed a problem in this situation. Due to the fact that they would have to crossYangtze River and their horses couldn't cross it and it couldn't be done on foot. Eventually, they built ships and recruited Chinese sailors. From 1268-1273, they led a siege to the crossroads at Hsiang-yang. Then, they imported Muslim engineers to build catapults and mangonels. They used these to hurl huge boulders at the enemy. This was a big advantage that couldn't be dodged or stopped by the enemy. In 1276, they occupied the Sung capital of Lin-an.Then, the final battle happened at sea in 1279 where they defeated the last sung emperor where they were drowned.

Why Japan?
Ever since 1272, Khan wanted to strike Japan. Being the grandson of Khan, he already got handed down power of most of China, plus Mongolia ans Korea. But, that just wasn't enough for this greedy ruler. He wanted Japan to pay him tribute, which they obviously wouldn't do. So he sent messages to Japan saying there will be consequences if they don't. He went 5 messages over there and then they wouldn't even let his messangers onto their island land. In 1266, he wanted to subdue all of China. The power he had wasn't good enough. He always wanted more. The odds were against Japan in this situation against Khan. Japan could only gather up 10,000 men to fight on their side. While Khan had an army of 40,000 men. He ordered to have 300-600 vessels made to have an even bigger advantage. Then in 1271, he defeated the Song Dynasty and became Yuan Dynasty ruler. Now, he was happy. But not quite enough...

Kublai Khan did alot for China while he was ruler. This includes him extending the Grand Canal ro Beijing. He repaired public granaries and extended highways. He was doing his best to make China a better place both physically and governmentally. He helped simplify the government by making paper currency. He also started aid agencies to help his citizens. As well, he improved postal stations. Along with extending highways, he extended waterways. He allowed religious freedom which made many people happy. He also founded the Yuan dynasty of China. He helped organize his political category as well. He was a great ruler when he stopped abuses which led to more population (which was good).
